MILLEDGEVILLE -- Janiyah Heyward got back in a groove scoring a team-best 18 and Jada Young had a career-high 13 points off the bench but Georgia College outscored USCB 19-12 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Sand Sharks 73-64 Wednesday night.
The opening period saw five lead changes and two ties before Beaufort went on an 8-0 run after the Bobcats tied the game at 11 to go up 19-11. Four different Sand Sharks contributed at least four points in the period as USCB shot 47 percent from the field. GCSU out scored the Sand Sharks in quarter two, but after a back and forth battle through nine minutes, Premo drained a triple from the top of the key to make it 33-30. Madison Self went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to end the period and send USCB into the break up four.
Heyward knocked down a 14-footer to start the second half putting USCB up six, but it was the Bobcats that battled back to tie it up three times over the next three minutes before taking its largest lead of the night at three after a Hannah Cail three-pointer. Beaufort tied it back up at 46 and the score remained deadlocked for the next three minutes. The Sand Sharks went on a 5-0 run to make it 52-47 hit back-to-back jumpers in the final minute to head into the fourth tied at 52.
The Sand Sharks scored the first five points of the final period and then two teams exchanged the lead over the course of the next four minutes as Georgie College battled back to within one and then take the lead with a floating jumper from Alexa Geary. GCSU made it a five-point game after Ashyia Willis drove to the basket and sunk the basket. The Bobcats would add on and early foul trouble hurt the Sand Sharks as the game ended with the score 73-64.
USCB continues its conference road trip Saturday as it travels to North Georgia for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff.
