USCB push rival Aiken to final seconds; fall in OT to Pacers

BLUFFTON — USCB men's basketball has shown that it has the flair for the dramatic during its inaugural season, and it was no different Wednesday night inside the Cove as the Sand Sharks fought to the final seconds against rival No. 8 USC Aiken, but the Pacers escaped the Lowcountry with 83-80 overtime victory.

"We were right there and had a chance," head coach Ron Fudala said. "I just feel for our guys right now, they played their butts off tonight. They are buying in and listening to what we're doing here. We're going to do good things here and tonight's game proves that."

Larry Bulluck led the way for five Sand Sharks in double-figures, posting a team-high 18 points. Marcus Overstreet put a stellar 15 points and 15 rebounds while Quarhn Anderson scored 14 points and Kevaughn Price netted 12 points with seven boards. Shea Champine added 10.

An eventful saw USCB hold the eighth-ranked Pacers to a multi-possession lead for most of the half. The Sand Sharks lead was trimmed to give, but Knney Gaines nailed a triple off the wing to give Beaufort its eight-point advantage. Aiken continued to battle and tied the game at 41 heading into half time.

The second half started with the Pacers going on a 5-0 run and gaining a six-point advantage. The Sand Sharks battled back to tie it at 57 and Bulluck put USCB back in front with a triple from the top of the key. Aiken then went on a 7-0 to regain the lead with just under six minutes remaining.

Overstreet drove to the basket as the clock winded down and the ball rattled the rim before failing to fall. Heading into overtime, the Sand Sharks quickly jumped ahead, and the Pacers missed three of four from the charity stripe, but Tyler Johnson put Aiken up 77-75 getting an old fashioned three-point play. The game remained close through the final seconds of OT but the Pacers escaped with a 83-80 win.

The Sand Sharks travel to Flagler College in St. Augustine this weekend, continuing Peach Belt play. Tipoff for Saturday's contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
