"Trust the process," Sand Sharks hang with Columbus State in loss

BLUFFTON -- It was a two-point game with under two minutes to play, and the Sand Sharks had all the momentum, but the visiting Columbus State Cougars went 7-for-8 from the free throw line to ice the game and hand USCB a tough 73-66 loss Wednesday night inside the Cove.

"We're competing in every game," said coach Sharon Versyp. "We've got a lot of young kids who are continuing to get better in all aspects of the game. We're right there, hanging with a good ball club, and to be there you want it more and it hurts a little more, but I'm proud of this group. Every day we get closer to where we want to be."

Three Sand Sharks posted double-digit efforts, led by junior Brielle Bartelt's 16. Janiyah Heyward contributed 15 points and Shaniya Rose had 14 along with eight boards.

Rose put USCB on the board, scoring the first points of the game from the charity stripe, but Columbus State followed with a 9-2 taking a six-point advantage. The Cougars added to its lead, but Beaufort came right back keeping the ball game close. Mahkayla Premo drove to the basket as the quarter expired to make a three-point game after one.

CSU knocked down a triple to open quarter two and extended the lead to seven with over five minutes as the Sand Sharks got into foul trouble midway through the period. The Cougars added to its lead, making it an 11-point game but the Sand Sharks scored the final basket of the half, making it 30-21 heading into the locker room.

The Sand Sharks opened the quarter on an 8-0 to make it a one-point game, forcing the Cougars to use a timeout. Out of the break USCB continued to keep the pressure defensively forcing several turnovers. CSU stormed back over the next three and half minutes increasing the lead to nine. Back-to-back triple from Bartelt moved it back to a one-point deficit but the Cougars went on a 12-6 run to end the period.

It remained a two-possession game for most of the final period. Heyward made it four-point game getting a three the old-fashioned way, and Taniyah Bowman's four-foot floater followed to make it 66-64. Columbus State took advantage of the clock and USCB's need to foul, icing the game, giving the Cougars a 73-66 victory.

"The fans have been fantastic, the support, unmatched. It's just a process and we're moving in the right direction."
