Gaines drops 35, Sand Sharks win in OT again

ST. AUGUSTINE -- For the second consecutive game, USCB men's basketball played into overtime and picked up another impressive victory. The Sand Sharks defeated Emory & Henry 104-102 in two overtimes to close out play at the Southeast Regional Crossover Saturday in St. Augustine.

Kenney Gaines had a career day scoring a game-high 35 points, going 13-for-18 from the field with six boards, four assists, and a steal to lead Beaufort's six players in double figures. Kevaughn Price (16), Dominic Eason (15), Nolan Paladugu (14), Kyle Polce (12), and Krishen Atwal (10) were the other Sand Sharks who posted double-figure scoring efforts.

USCB trailed by as many as 10 late in the first half, but Polce ended the opening period with a layup to head into the break behind by eight with the score 45-37.

The Wasps opened the second half on a 6-0 run before Eason drained a triple to end the scoreless streak. Emory & Henry though, would hold a double-digit lead midway through the period and extended the lead to as many as 15, but USCB used an 8-0 run over two minutes to knot the game at 73 with under five to play.

Gaines put the Sand Sharks in front for the first time with a layup at the 3:35 mark and Paladugu knocked down a three ball, making it a four-point USCB advantage. The Wasps' Gabe Brown connected with a three-pointer to recapture the lead for Emory & Henry, but Gaines sunk a triple of his own to take the lead right back. Atwal's jumper with 13 seconds remaining put Beaufort up three, but Brown hit another three-pointer with one second left to send the game into overtime.

The teams exchanged the lead back and forth during the first OT period. Neither team took larger than a three-point lead and after the first five minutes of overtime the game was tied at 93. Polce connected with a triple 12 seconds into the second OT, but the Wasps quickly tied it and took the lead with under two to play. Price's jumper and Gaines knocking down both ends from the charity stripe gave USCB the lead, and the Tallahassee native secured the go-ahead bucket with a basket in the paint and grabbed the rebound to end the game with the Sand Sharks coming out on top 104-102.

Beaufort continues play on the road this weekend traveling above the Mason Dixon line for matchups with Pitt Johnstown and West Virginia Wesleyan next Saturday and Sunday.
