Big innings, defense, hurt USCB in opener vs Rams

HARDEEVILLE -- USCB held a three-run lead in the middle innings, but consecutive errors in the sixth inning led to a big inning that hurt the Sand Sharks in the end, falling to Shepherd 7-5 Friday night at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
 
Tyler Kennedy and John Leland each recorded two hits and an RBI while Brian Meyer and Anthony Storzieri each drove in runs. Beaufort's starter Josh Patterson took the tough-luck loss working six innings allowing seven runs, only two of them earned on seven hits with three punchouts and a walk.
 
Patterson faced the minimum through the first 10 batters before Greg Borges picked up Shepherd's first hit in the fourth.
 
The Sand Sharks broke through in the second thanks to Tyler Kennedy's RBI single up the middle and then added a second run as Seth Robinson hustled home after John Leland beat out an infield single. Patterson worked a shutdown inning in the top half of the third to keep the Rams at bay. Beaufort added two more in the fifth after Brian Meyer's infield single. 
 
Shepherd put together a big inning in sixth scoring four runs and then added two more in the seventh as USCB's defense struggled over the two-inning span.  
 
The three-game slate continues tomorrow night with a 5 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
