Premo clutch at the stripe, USCB holds on to defeat Flagler

BLUFFTON -- Mahkayla Premo grabbed the loose ball rebound and toed the baseline, eventually getting fouled and then knocked down both ends at the charity stripe giving USCB a 58-56 lead. The Sand Sharks picked off the incoming pass securing the win, extending USCB's winning streak to four games, ending the home portion of the schedule on a high note.

Both Premo and Taniyah Bowman dropped 15 points to lead Beaufort's offense. Shaniya Rose and Madison Self were forces on the glass picking up a combined 22 rebounds for USCB.

USCB and Flagler battled through a back and forth first half culminating in a three-point lead for the Sand Sharks at half time. Bowman put up seven points in the half, picking up five of them from the free throw line.

Flagler controlled much of the third quarter and held a one-point lead heading into the fourth. But it was Premo that knocked down a game-tying triple with a Saints defender in her face and Kay'Mar Griffin followed up a layup through the defense giving USCB back its lead.

The teams exchanged blows, both giving up and retaking the lead as the clock winded down. Flagler hit a three-pointer to take a 55-53 lead, but a loose ball scrambled ended with the Saints' Jessica Dowdy fouling out and Bowman heading to the line for two with 40 seconds remaining. She went 1-for-2 but the Saints followed did the same with 30 second remaining.

Self picked up one of her rebounds and then put it back to tie the game at 56. After Sharale McCormick missed and fouled Premo, the Savannah native was pure from the line with 0.6 seconds remaining. The Saints tried a baseball pass on the in bounds to take a shot a miracle three-pointer but Rose picked off the pass and the Sand Sharks flooded the court in victory.

USCB finishes its inaugural home season with an 8-6 record and will travel to Columbus State on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. scheduled tipoff with the Cougars.
