Softball splits day one of Lowcountry Classic

HARDEEVILLE -- USCB's softball team split a pair of games with Erskine and Tusculum during the first day of the Lowcountry Classic, dropping the opener to Erskine 6-2 and claiming a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Pioneers in eight innings.

The Sand Sharks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first following RBI doubles from Taelor Chang and Addie Reynolds. The Flying Fleet answered with a pair of runs in both the second and third before adding another two in the sixth. Abigail Ramirez took the loss last just 2.1 innings allowing four runs, all earned on four hits.

The night cap began with TU pushing across a single run in the top of the first, but Beaufort answered with two in the bottom half of the inning after two runs scored on an error. Two innings later the Pioneers tied it up with sac fly. Tristen Norris pinch hit in the fourth and promptly drilled a solo homer over the left field wall. Devon Weller's RBI double to left center made it 4-2 USCB.

It looked as if Beaufort was on its way to a two-run victory after Tusculum made two quick outs, but TU scored three two-out runs to take a 5-4 lead. Chang was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, notting the game at five apiece as we went to extras.

Tusculum scored in the top half of the inning, but Saria Simmons singled and Jaci Coleman's sac fly made it 6-6 and with the bases loaded Simmons scored the game-winner on a wild pitch.
