Coleman homers, Ramirez dazzles, Sand Sharks split with Cavs

HARDEEVILLE -- Jaci Coleman hit her first career home run in game one and Abigail Ramirez tossed a gem in game two as USCB split with visiting UVA Wise Thursday afternoon, falling in game one 11-1 and taking game two 3-2.

The Cavaliers jumped on start Cierra Kinlaw (5-5) in the first inning, scoring eight runs chasing the lefty after two-thirds of an inning. Coleman put the Sand Sharks on the board when she blasted a ball to center field that appeared Adyson Gibson made the catch but her arm was extended and the ball cleared the fence for Beaufort's first run. Coleman added another hit later in the game, but that was it for the Sand Shark's offense in the opener. UVA Wise added three more in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.

Game two was a pitchers duel through the first three innings before the Sand Sharks broke through after Coleman collected her third RBI of the day with a sac fly. The bottom part of USCB's lineup came up clutch as Katelyn Boyette and Saria Simmons collected RBIs to make it 3-0. Ramirez was cruising through six innings, allowing just three hits, but the Cavs opened the seventh with two singles and a walk before the Sand Sharks traded a run for an out. A second run crossed the plate after a wild pitch, but it was Simmons who made the game saving catch as Sarah Barrett hit one off the end of the bat and Beaufort's left fielder sprinted in and laid out to make the grab ending the game 3-2.

USCB welcomes PBC foe Flagler to the 'Ville this weekend for a three-game series beginning Saturday with a doubleheader set for 2 p.m. first pitch.
