Sand Sharks, Cougars clash in heavyweight bout; CSU comes out on top

COLUMBUS -- A potential Peach Belt Conference tournament showdown occurred Wednesday night with the top two teams in the standings taking center stage. But unfortunately for USCB the Columbus State Cougars picked up the victory, defeating the Sand Sharks 99-87 to claim the top spot in the PBC.

Beaufort had five players in double-figures, which is usually good form for the Sand Sharks, but it wasn't enough against the 17th ranked team in the country. Dominc Eason led the way offensively for Beaufort with 19 points along with six rebounds. Kenney Gaines had 16 points, Lukas Platuana added 14 while Kevaughn Price posted 12 and Dylan Lewis 10.

USCB's fast paced offense faced another tough test again in the early moments verus the Cougars. The Sand Sharks held a 9-8 lead at the 17:28 mark but Wisdom Uboh connected with a three-pointer to retake the lead. CSU would go on to extend the lead to as large as 14 points with the score 40-26. Beaufort's attack never gave in though, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and trimmed the lead to single digits at the half.

Platana led the way for the Sand Sharks with 14 first half points. He went 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and 5-for-9 from the field.

The Sand Sharks pushed the tempo as the second half began, cutting the lead down to two possessions multiple times throughout the half. Eason drained back-to-back triples and USCB continued to battle back with the 17th ranked Cougars.

With six minutes to play, Price knocked down both from the charity stripe and Gaines picked off the inbound pass and finished the basket to cut the lead down to four. CSU went on a 5-0 run over a 1:11 span to take a nine-point lead into the final media timeout.

It felt like a heavyweight bout over the final three minutes as both teams went blow for blow. Alejandro Ralat's driving layup made it a two-possession game. It wasn't enough though as USCB was forced to foul as the clock winded down and CSU held on for the 12-point victory.

The Sand Sharks battle with Clayton State on Saturday in Morrow with tipoff set for 3:30 p.m.
