Norton's career day propels Sand Sharks past Lakers

BLUFFTON -- USCB's men's basketball ended its short two-game skid with an impressive 81-70 over Clayton State Saturday evening behind Hudson Norton's career day. 
 
Playing in front of a favorable crowd for the first time in over a month and a half, Norton dropped a career-high 23 points and was just one rebound shy of picking up his first career double-double with nine caroms. Dominic Eason was the other Sand Shark who scored in double-figures as the freshman scored 14 points. 
 
After some feisty opening moments, the game saw four ties early on, but it was USCB that took control after Atwal scored on back-to-back possessions and then Norton split the defense and threw down a monster two-handed jam to increase the Sand Sharks lead. Kevaughn Price made it six-point game with under six to play, and Kyle Polce drained a long three-pointer as the clock read 5:31.
 
Tasso Sfanos' banked home a triple and the Sand Sharks kept the pressure up, countering every score the Lakers made with one of their own. The half ended with a defensive stand from Beaufort and USCB held an eight-point advantage at the half.
 
Beaufort used its strength from beyond the arc to open the second half as Dominic Eason connected with two three-pointers and Kenney Gaines did the same and it was a 10-point USCB lead at first media timeout. Out the break Dylan Lewis sparked a run with a quick five-point swing that started with a three-ball and a driving layup and Norton followed up with another trice on the scoreboard. 
 
CSU battled back to within six with five minutes to play Norton's relentless pursuit of a basket pushed made the score 70-62. Coming out of the last media time out Norton as threw down a thunderous posterizing slam dunk that electrified the Cove. 
 
USCB hits the road next week and will travel up to Greenwood for a weeknight contest with Lander. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and with follow the women's game.
