Sand Sharks Battle to 1-1 Draw Against Georgia Southwestern

BLUFFTON, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) women's soccer team hosted Georgia Southwestern State on Wednesday afternoon, playing to a 1-1 draw. The Sand Sharks scored in the first half, while the Hurricanes answered with a second-half goal.

"It was really a tale of two halves for us I thought today.
We came out strong and connected passes, and seemingly took
our foot off the gas in the second half. Our league is too good to
expect a win in that fashion," said head coach Gary Boughton.

USCB now sits at 8-1-2 on the season with a 3-1-2 record in Peach Belt Conference play. Georgia Southwestern moves to 4-5-2 overall and 1-3-2 in conference.

"The reality is that we're 11 games in and have one loss this season. GSW is a hard working, tough team, and so although the result wasn't what we hoped for, we're getting closer to where we want to be as a team come November," stated Gary Boughton.

In the first half, Jasiah Pack netted her seventh goal of the season, assisted by Sophia Willis. The Sand Sharks finished the game with 20 total shots, 13 of which were on goal. Goalkeepers Graysen Asher and Ciazia Powe combined for seven saves in the match.

The Sand Sharks came out aggressive, recording three early shots and earning a corner kick opportunity. In the 15th minute, after gaining possession, a few quick passes led to Willis finding Pack for the opening goal, giving USCB a 1-0 lead.

USCB controlled most of the first half, limiting Georgia Southwestern's chances. Powe made a key save midway through the half and another just before the break to preserve the 1-0 advantage at halftime.

The second half began with scoring chances for USCB, including a shot that hit off the top post as the score remained.

Asher made her first save of the day in the 71st minute one of her four saves of the afternoon.
Georgia Southwestern equalized in the 76th minute, converting a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Ella Moody scored the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

USCB pressed for a late winner, earning two corner kicks. The Sand Sharks earned a couple of shots of the corner including one on goal but Alana Beddow the GSW goalkeeper made the save to keep the game tied.

In the final minute, Georgia Southwestern attempted a game-winner, but Asher made a crucial stop to secure the draw. The conference matchup ended 1-1, with both teams earning a point.

The Sand Sharks now hit the road for the next three games, starting on Saturday, October 11, against Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
