Men’s Basketball Fall on Road to Lander

GREENWOOD, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort men's basketball team traveled to Lander for a conference game on Saturday afternoon. Lander (6–2, 1–1) used a dominant first half to build a 30-point lead and went on to defeat the Sand Sharks (6–3, 0–2) by a score of 103–74.

The Sand Sharks were led by Kevaughn Price, who posted a team-high 19 points on seven made field goals along with three rebounds and two steals. Two other players reached double figures, including Lukas Platauna with 11 points and Dominic Eason with 10. Eason also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.

Lander opened the game with the first four points before Aiden Fitzgerald connected on a three-pointer to get the Sand Sharks on the board. USC Beaufort later tied the game at 8–8 when Price scored through contact after an offensive-rebound put back before converting for a three-point play at the foul line.

The Bearcats delivered at the 15-minute mark a big run to open the scoring, using a 16–2 run to take a 25–10 lead over the Sand Sharks. During the stretch, the Sand Sharks went 1-for-6 from the field and committed three turnovers, while Lander shot 7-of-11. Eason briefly halted the run with a three-pointer assisted by Seth Cullen, but Lander answered back with a three of their own to counter the Sand Sharks. This was followed by a 10–0 Bearcats run soon after as they extended the USCB deficit to 28 points with six minutes remaining in the half.

Lander led by as many as 31 before taking a 57–26 advantage into halftime, shooting 60 percent from the floor in the opening half.

Price opened the second-half scoring by converting his second three-point play on an assist from Evan Kilminster, who then added an offensive-rebound put back layup following a turnover. Platauna and Cullen combined for five straight points, including a three-point play from Cullen, as the Sand Sharks found a solid run following the halftime break.

Both teams traded baskets for much of the remainder of the second half as the Sand Sharks chipped into the deficit before Lander extended their lead back to 30. Platauna scored the final four points for USCB, while Israel Eatman knocked down a late three-pointer off an offensive rebound in the final two minutes. Lander closed out the 103–74 victory.

The Sand Sharks will return home for the conference home opener on Wednesday, December 10th, hosting Augusta at 7:30 p.m.
