Bats cooled in doubleheader versus FMU

FLORENCE -- USCB softball's win streak came to an end Wednesday evening against Francis Marion dropping both ends of a midweek doubleheader 4-3 and 9-1.

Katelyn Boyette recorded two hits with two runs driven in and center fielder Daryn Miller stayed hot at the dish, recording two hits in four at-bats. Cierra Kinlaw (3-1) tossed a complete game, allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits. The lefty issued four walks and struck out five batters.

Tamiyah Whitlock was the lone Sand Shark to record hits in the nightcap. She went 2-for-3 with a triple. Cassie Brundage (2-1) got the nod in game two and threw 3.1 innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits.

GAME ONE
FMU tagged Kinlaw for the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the first, but USCB answered in the top half of the second after Boyette's run scoring double.

The Patriots scored a single run in the fourth to take the lead and then tacked on two more runs after Payton Gale's two-run homer.

After two quick outs to begin the inning, Cassie Brundage doubled, and Addie Reynolds singled for the Sand Sharks putting the tying run in scoring position. The Patriots made a mid-at bat pitching change following two pitches that never left the circle due to the slippery conditions. Mariah Stephens walked to load the bases, bring up Boyette. The Suwanee native put the ball in play after falling behind 0-2 but grounded out to the third base to end the game.

GAME TWO
Jenna Walling kept USCB off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when Brundage drove in a run with a ground out. Abigail Ramirez and Emily Morgan finished out the game in the circle for Beaufort, combing for 5.2 innings.

Francis Marion scored one in the first, four in the fourth, and another single run in the fifth. The Patriots scored three in the sixth to invoke the 8-run mercy rule.

The Sand Sharks host Shorter and Southern Wesleyan in the Sand Shark Classic this weekend beginning on Friday at 12 noon in Hardeeville.
