Power Surge; Sand Sharks light up scoreboard in sweep of Hawks

HARDEEVILLE -- It didn't take long for the USCB Softball team to find its groove offensively after suffering a pair of losses earlier in the week as the Sand Sharks routed the visiting Shorter Hawks in the first day of the Sand Shark Classic 11-0 and 11-5 Friday afternoon at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville.

Beaufort recorded a combined 28 hits and 22 runs in the sweep, upping the team batting average to .350 on the year and the Sand Sharks are out slugging opponents .520 to .337 in the first 12 games of the season.

The offense was led by eight players who had multi-hit performances in the sweep. Tamiyah Whitlock collected five hits, Saria Simmons had four, Daryn Miller ran her batting average to .500 with her three-hit afternoon.MJ Stradinger had a three-hit day in game two, and Taelor Chang, Addie Reynolds, and Chloe Turner all had two-hits in the shutout game one victory.

Cierra Kinlaw (4-1) tossed three scoreless innings striking out four batters and only allowing one hit in game one. Abigail Ramirez finished out the game tossing two scoreless with three punch outs. Cassie Brundage worked 6.2 relief innings to earn the victory in game two. The sophomore righty allowed just four hits, a walk and two punchies while throwing jsut 45 pitches.

GAME ONE
The offense was clicking from the first pitch as every starter in the lineup had at least one hit.

The Sand Sharks explosive offense took center stage to start game one as four runs in both the first and second innings came across the plate. Taelor Chang plated Beaufort's run with a single up the middle.

The big blows came from Makenzie Fore and Reynolds who each drilled three-run bombs. USCB tacked on three more runs in the third as the reserves made their way into the game. Alyssa Rose reached on a fielder's choice and then Caleigh Eubanks laced a run scoring hit up the middle. Reynolds tacked on another RBI with a base hit to left.

GAME TWO
In game two, Emily Morgan got tagged early allowing five runs – four earned – and recorded only one out. But USCB answered scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first.

A successful double steal from Fore and Simmons scored Beaufort's first run and a fielding error by the left fielder Espee Reyes allowed the second run to score. Chang picked up her second RBI of the day with double off the centerfield wall, trimming the Hawk's lead to 5-3. The Sand Sharks offense added four runs in the third after Turner's sac fly and Brundage reached on a fielding error. Stradinger ripped a single to the third baseman couldn't handle and Whitlock beat out an infield single to put USCB in front 7-5.

It was all Beaufort the rest of the game. Brundage added another RBI in the fourth and Miller single to right in the sixth to score Chang and it was the speedy left fielder Whitlock who capped the Sand Sharks scoring in game two, lacing a sharp grounder to third and easily beating the throw.

USCB hosts Southern Wesleyan for a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 2 and 4 p.m. in the final two games of Sand Shark Classic.
