USCB dominates in OT, take down rival Pacers

BLUFFTON -- The great coach Mike Krzyzewski once said, "Great rivalries don't have to be built on hatred. They're built on respect, on a respect for excellence." And while the rivalry between the Sand Sharks and the Pacers is still in its infancy, if Wednesday's action is any indication of how it will play out for years to come, fans of both programs are in for a treat.

Looking to avenge Monday's loss USCB protected its home court and picked up its first win over its in state rival USC Aiken 100-88 in overtime in front of an amazing crowd inside the Cove.

Five players scored in double-figures led by freshman Dominic Eason's 19 points. Hudson Norton contributed 18 points and scored nine of his 18 points in the overtime period. Kevaughn Price, Tasso Sfanos, and Kyle Polce were the other Sand Sharks with at least 10 points.

The fast-paced Sand Sharks offense and four early triples put Beaufort up early. After Kenney Gaines drove through the basket and scored putting USCB up seven, the Pacers were forced to call a timeout. Aiken trimmed the lead to five with 10 to play but Kyle Polce's and-one earned the Sand Sharks an old-fashioned three-point play.

Terrific ball movement found Price wide open in the corner and the Pittsburgh native hit nothing but net and fired up the USCB bench. Beaufort would go on to score 10 more points and hold a seven-point lead heading into the half.

Rhyjon Blackwell connected with a three-ball to open the half, but Polce sent shock waves through the Cove by slamming home a posterizing slam dunk over multiple Pacer defenders. Polce and Price – the Pittsburgh duo – followed the play up with a beautiful lob layup. The Sand Sharks maintained its two-possession lead for most of the half and with under 10 minutes to play both teams were in the bonus.

Eason's corner three put Beaufort up 11 with just over eight minutes remaining. Aiken trimmed the lead back to single digits as the clock winded down to under three and Simeon German was a relentless force on the offensive glass pulling down five boards. A couple of Sand Shark fouls and turnovers allowed USC Aiken to pull within two points, but Sfanos hit a clutch three-pointer to make it a five-point USCB lead. Blackwell was left open in the corner and tied the game at 83 and for the second consecutive year, the rivalry game went into overtime.

Norton knocked down four straight free throws to open the extra period, but a three-point play cut the lead to one. Sfanos brought the ball up and weaved his way through to keep USCB in front, however, the Pacers kept on Beaufort's heels. Price hit a triple to give some breathing room and Gaines was fouled and the senior converted both free throws to male it 94-88. Aiken missed five straight attempts at the basket, and it was still a six-point game with under a minute left.

The Pacers were forced to foul for the remainder of the game and Beaufort hit the century mark for sixth time this season.

USCB hits the road for the last time this weekend traveling south to St. Augustine for a 3:30 tipoff with Flagler. The last time the two teams met USCB came back from a 22-point deficit to take the lead late in the second half before ultimately falling by one.
