11 runs in three innings, Sand Sharks blast Jags in series opener

AUGUSTA -- Powered by the bats of Jeremy Brown and Luke Doty - who both clobbered three-run homers - USCB started the PBC season off on a positive note claiming a 12-2 victory over Augusta Friday afternoon. 11 unanswered runs in the late innings propelled the Sand Sharks to victory.

Brown led the way with three hits two of which were homers and four RBI. Doty had two hits and three runs driven in while Nikko Andre and Carson Weathers also had hits that drove in runs. Noah Campbell, Cooper McDaniel, and Jon Davis also contributed to the offensive onslaught with a combined four hits.

Joe Turner (1-1) picked up the win tossing six innings of two run ball. The Sterling Heights native allowed just two hits while striking out a season-high seven batters earning a quality start. Matt Navarro worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Andrew Kleppinger closed out the game working a scoreless ninth.

Augusta scored an unearned run in the first, but Carson Weathers knotted the game in the top half of the second with a single to left center. A second unearned run came across in the fourth and the game remained scoreless until the seventh.

Back-to-back singles and walk opened the seventh. After a flyout kept the bases loaded, Hunter Pontzer's pitch got away allowing Weathers to score and tie the game at two. That turned the lineup over for Doty who took the 1-0 fastball deep over the left field wall. Brown sent Elijah Durnell's 2-1 heater to the opposite field to put USCB up 6-2. Andre singled home two in the ninth and a third run came across on another wild pitch before Brown crushed a mammoth three-run homer to straight away center.

The series continues tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
