Sheridan “the Jackal" Bostic lights up the scoreboard, drops 26 vs Cougars

BLUFFTON -- A lucky bounce or two could've been the difference for USCB Wednesday night as Taniyah Bowman's final second shot rattled around the rim, but fell just short of going in and sending the crowd inside the Cove into a frenzy as Columbus State hung on for a 78-77 win over the Sand Sharks.

Sheridan "the Jackal" Bostic shined for the Sand Sharks posting a career-high 26 points and broke her previous single-game record of made threes, going 8-for-10 from beyond the arc and 9-of-12 from the field. Lydia Gattozzi was the other USCB player to score in double figures as she scored 12.

The Sand Sharks fell behind early but kept pace with the Cougars throughout the period. Jasmine Stevens' hook shot put CSU up 14-8, but Bostic connected with one of her two first half triples to make it a three-point game. Columbus State knocked down a three ball of their own, but the Bostic sank another long ball from the corner, making it a one-point game. Gattozzi's drive to the basket with 1:51 left put USCB in front for the first time. Ariea Garrett scored the next four points for Beaufort and the score was tied at the end of the first period.

The score remained close through the midway point of the quarter before CSU held a two-possession lead with 2:32 remaining in the half. Bowman was pure from the charity stripe cutting it to 40-38 and Gattozzi followed with two of her own to knot the game at 40. Olonnna Rawls laid one in to give the Cougars a two-point lead at halftime.

CSU began the second half on a 7-0 but Bowman went coast-to-coast to end the Cougars' run. After extending the lead to 12 with a layup, Brielle Bartelt pulled up and sunk a three-pointer cutting it back to single digits but again the Cougars hit one from long range to extend the lead. The momentum started to swing in Beaufort's favor after Bostic caught fire over the final two minutes of the third quarter. She scored 12 points in a matter of just over 70 seconds to make it 65-62.

Columbus State held on to a five-point lead into the fourth quarter with the score 67-62. Bostic again was lights out from three-point land. Her 23rd point of the night to made it four-point game and Bartelt followed by connecting with back-to-back midrange jumpers to make it 69-67. Rawls hit a three-pointer to recapture the two-possession lead for CSU with under five to play. Bostic's eighth bucket from beyond the arc made it 76-72 and Brianna Pelote finished a tough layup to make it a two-point game. Bowman's next layup made it 78-77 with under a minute to play. She had a chance to win in the final seconds, but the floater hit off the back iron and rattled out giving CSU the one-point victory.

The regular season comes to a close this weekend as the Sand Sharks host Augusta on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. scheduled tipoff. In between games, the women's basketball senior class will be honored.
