Let the "Madness" begin; USCB clinch home playoff game with win over Jags

BLUFFTON -- A memorial night where the Sand Sharks honored its first senior class ended in celebration as USCB clinched its first home playoff game in program history with an 87-83 victory over Augusta Saturday evening in front of a thunderous crowd inside the Cove.

Pat Iriel, Kenney Gaines, Kyle Polce, Alejandro Ralat were honored in a pregame ceremony with a special message from head coach Ron Fudala: "Kenney, Ale, Kyle, and Pat – today we celebrate more than just achievements on the court, we celebrate the senior's role in establishing a legacy. This first group of seniors have made history, and their hard work, dedication and leadership will live on forever. Thank you for your contribution to the growth and success of our program."

Iriel knocked down his first triple of the season, Gaines had 15 points, Polce added eight and Ralat scored six. Freshman Dominic Eason led the team offensively with three scorers in double-figures scoring 17 points including, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc while Nolan Paladugu was the other Sand Shark in double-figures with 12.

Back-to-back three pointers put the Sand Sharks up early. Augusta cut it down to a two-point deficit, but USCB beat the Jags' defense and Eason threw down a monstrous tomahawk slam dunk before the offense hit Augusta with consecutive long three-pointers to make it 22-12. Beaufort continued to hold on to the lead throughout the rest of the half, but AU converted a four-point play and hit another triple to end the half down 45-44.

Price scored the first bucket for either team in the second half, a long triple from the wing. Augusta's Elias Palsson hit his third three-pointer of the game to knot the game at 50, but Tasso Sfanos' drive and Dylan Lewis' two-handed jam put USCB back up by four. Palsson hit his fourth triple to give Augusta its first lead but Eason and then Polce drained threes of their own to recapture USCB's advantage. The back-and-forth affair continued as the team's exchanged the lead on multiple possessions. The Sand Sharks held a 78-75 point lead but Palsson sank another three ball to tie it at 78. Gaines put Beaufort up four after weaving through the defense and kissing it off the glass. The senior knocked down a clutch free throw to put USCB up four and on the ensuing inbound all the Sand Sharks let Augusta run up the court as time expired.

As the the number four seed, the Sand Sharks will now wait for the Peach Belt to announce the tie breaker scenario after Flagler, Lander, and North Georgia are all tied for the fifth spot in the standings.
