First of the First, Sand Sharks honor seniors to conclude season

BLUFFTON -- The women's basketball senior class of 2025 honored in between Saturday's doubleheader as the Sand Sharks celebrated Brielle Bartelt, Sheridan Bostic, Arie'a Garrett, and Shaniya Rose following USCB's 61-44 loss to Augusta.

Head coach Sharon Versyp had this message for the "first of the first." "Ari, Bart, Shaniya, Sheridan - you chose to come to a brand-new program to start a legacy. Without you four, there would not be a foundation built for USCB Women's Basketball. The four of you will forever be remembered for your contributions to this program. I am so thankful for you bringing your talents here to USCB and being the First of the First. Congratulations ladies. We're so proud of you!"

Bartelt posted eight points, Bostic had added six, Garrett had four and Rose contributed 3. Taniyah Bowman led the team with nine points.

Augusta scored a quick basket to begin the game, but USCB answered over the next three minutes, tying the game at 8-8 with Garrett's first points of the game. Gattozzi found Bostic open at wing and she drained home the bucket to put the Sand Sharks in front. Her second triple of the day gave Beaufort a 14-12 lead. Madison Self's offensive board and put back made it a two-possession lead with under two minutes to play in the opening quarter.

The Sand Sharks maintained its lead for most of the second period, before Augusta tied it and took the fight before the media timeout. The Jags held a two-score lead for the remainder of the period and Bostic's three-pointer bounced off the backboard and the score was 31-26 at halftime.

The Jags pushed the lead out nine two minutes in, but USCB battled back to within six as the third quarter ticked down. Sierra Burns corner three put Augusta back up nine with 2:48 to play. The Sand Shark defense forced a turnover and then Bowman tipped out the AU's inbound attempt to keep it at 41-34 heading into the quarter four.

Augusta opened on 9-2 run forcing a timeout from coach Versyp and then followed up with another basket to make it 52-36. The Jags added another seven points while USCB added eight and the game ended with an Augusta win 61-44.
