Sand Sharks back in the win column after taking down Augusta

HARDEEVILLE -- The Sand Sharks knew it was only a matter of time before they could claim the victory that had eluded them for the past couple of weeks. That moment finally arrived Friday night in Hardeeville, as Beaufort's offense erupted for six runs on 14 hits en route to a 6-4 victory in a non-conference matchup with Augusta, snapping its prolonged losing streak.

Jon Davis and Carson Weathers set the tone for USCB, combining for five hits and driving in four of the team's six runs. The duo was just two of five Sand Sharks who recorded multi-hit performances. Noah Campbell, Jake Tanner, and Tanner Wagnon each collected two hits, with Tanner driving in the other run for the home team.

Joe Turner got the start, tossing two scoreless innings, while Ty Siksta followed with two scoreless frames of his own. Alex Simmons worked three innings, allowing just two runs on two hits, and Matt Navarro (1-0) picked up the win with a clean inning in relief of Simmons. Ian Barnes shut the door for the Sand Sharks, quickly recording two outs in the ninth before the Jaguars cut the deficit in half with a two-run homer.

Davis' double down the left-field line put the Sand Sharks on the board in the first inning, and the game remained scoreless for the next five frames. USCB's pitching staff kept the Jags off the board through seven innings before Weathers singled up the middle to make it 2-0, keeping Beaufort in control. Augusta finally broke through in the eighth, earning a leadoff walk before a double put both runners in scoring position. A sacrifice fly plated the Jaguars' first run, and a high chopper to short tied the game at 2-2.

Davis led off the bottom half of the inning by crushing his first homer of the season to left field. The solo shot electrified USCB's dugout, and Tanner brought home Wagnon four batters later. Weathers added some insurance with a rocket to short, plating the Sand Sharks' sixth run.

Barnes allowed a leadoff single but battled to retire the next two Jaguars before surrendering a two-run shot that made it 6-4. A groundout to Campbell at shortstop ended the game and secured the long-awaited victory for USCB.

The Sand Sharks will welcome Columbus State to the Lowcountry next Friday at 6 p.m. in Hardeeville.
