JACKSONVILLE -- USCB fought until the final at-bat but ultimately fell in walk-off fashion Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 9-8 contest in 10 innings to Edward Waters at Henry L. Aaron Field in Jacksonville. The Sand Sharks held multiple leads throughout the game but couldn't fend off a late charge from the Tigers, who rallied in the eighth and tenth innings to secure the win.
Despite the loss, USCB's offense shined, producing 11 hits while consistently pressuring Edward Waters' pitching staff. The Sand Sharks also showed patience at the plate, drawing eight walks and swiping two bases. Cooper McDaniel had a stellar performance, going a perfect 5-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and both of USCB's stolen bases. Jeremy Brown continued his strong season at the plate, finishing 4-for-6 with a team-high four RBIs. Jon Davis added two hits in six at-bats, driving in and scoring a run.
USCB's pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts, with Ty Siksta delivering a dominant relief outing, striking out two in a perfect inning of work. However, the bullpen struggled late, with Andrew Kleppinge (0-1) taking the loss after allowing three earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning.
Edward Waters jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues by the Sand Sharks. USCB responded in the third when Brown came through with a clutch hit, driving in two runs to even the score. The Sand Sharks' offense continued applying pressure, adding two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. A two-run seventh inning extended USCB's lead to 7-3, seemingly putting them in control.
However, the Tigers mounted a furious comeback, scoring four runs in the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. After a scoreless ninth, USCB briefly reclaimed the lead in the top of the tenth, pushing across a run to go up 8-7.
Needing just three outs to secure a hard-fought road victory and snap their five-game skid, the Sand Sharks were stunned when Edward Waters delivered a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the tenth, sealing the 9-8 defeat.
USCB's long road trip continues this weekend at Georgia College, beginning Friday. First pitch against the Bobcats is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Milledgeville.
