HARDEEVILLE -- The USCB Sand Sharks roared back from an early deficit and never looked back, completing a Sunday sweep of Claflin with a commanding 12-2 victory at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville.Â
Claflin struck first, pushing across two runs off starter Ian Barnes (1-5). Kaymon Quarles laced an RBI single in the opening frame, and Tyler Gilbert's sacrifice fly in the fourth extended the Panthers' lead to 2-0. But that was all they'd get as Barnes settled in and the Sand Sharks' offense ignited. He worked seven innings of two-run ball, allowing just five hits and striking out six Panthers. He did not walk a batter in route to picking up his first victory of the year.
The momentum shifted in the fourth when Joe Turner ripped a two-run double to the left-center gap, tying the game at 2. Barnes responded with a shutdown inning, and USCB seized the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Noah Campbell was hit by a pitch, swiped second, and raced home on a Nikko Andre RBI single to right. Barnes returned to the mound and tossed a scoreless sixth to preserve the 3-2 advantage.
Jacques Walker extended the lead with an RBI double to bring home Terry Dean, and then the floodgates opened. A wild pitch allowed a run to score, and Walker added another RBI with a single to right. Another wild pitch plated a second run in the frame, and Jon Davis capped the rally with a booming triple to left-center that scored Walker. Davis was thrown out trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park homer, but the damage was done.
Brayton Wilmes entered and struck out the side in a clean eighth, and the offense kept rolling. Jeremy Brown's double and back-to-back walks loaded the bases, setting up Jake Tanner's sac fly for USCB's ninth run. Turner added another RBI double, a wild pitch made it 11-2, and Davis ended it with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, sealing the 12-2 mercy-rule win.
With the sweep, USCB builds momentum heading into its final Peach Belt Conference series of the season, fighting for a spot in the postseason tournament. The Sand Sharks hit the road Thursday for a pivotal three-game set at Flagler in St. Augustine.
