CHAMPIONS! Men's Golf claims program's first PBC crown

AUGUSTA -- The University of South Carolina Beaufort men's golf team made history Sunday, capturing the school's first-ever Peach Belt Conference championship in any sport with a dominant showing at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta. The Sand Sharks finished with a team total of 851, an impressive 13-under-par, to clinch the program's first NCAA Division II conference title.

The championship run was anchored by standout freshman Erik Rengardt, who delivered a wire-to-wire victory to claim the individual crown, finishing 9-under for the tournament. Rengardt opened the championship with rounds of 67 and 69 before sealing the deal with a 1-under 71 in Sunday's finale. His composure was tested in the final round after starting his round off with a bogey on number 9, he then made seven consecutive pars and then birdied 18, sitting at even par at the turn. He would go on to birdie three of the next seven holes before carding back-to-back bogeys to end his round at 1-under.

"This is a big win for Erik," said head coach Cory Cottrell. "A win he earned and its incredibly well deserved. How he practices and competes is everything you could ever want. He represents USCB and himself incredibly well."

Rengardt's performance was backed by a solid team effort. Nicolas Normand and Aaron Williams each carded 1-over final rounds to finish even par for the tournament, tying for 10th overall. Their consistency helped USCB maintain its edge atop a competitive leaderboard.

Ellis Bright wrapped up the tournament's final round with a 1-over score and tying for 21st, while Nikolai Holme posted a 77 in the final round but still managed a 2-over total, good for a tie in 15th place.

"I couldn't be happier with the result," Cottrell said. "To come in and win the PBC tournament, in the manner they did, is a dream. The Peach Belt Conference is a powerhouse of a conference with coaches and players that I can't speak highly enough about or respect more. This conference has some of the best players in the country and to win this tournament is a testament to our guys' work ethic all year."
