Sand Sharks suffer 5-3 loss to Savanah State in non-conference action

SAVANNAH -- USCB baseball couldn't find the timely hit it needed Tuesday afternoon, falling 5-3 to Savannah State in its non-conference finale at Tiger Field.

Brayden Fowler got the start for the Sand Sharks but lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up three runs—two earned—on four hits while striking out two. The senior right-hander worked a clean first inning, but the Tigers broke through in the second with back-to-back doubles that plated three runs and set the tone early.

Savannah State tacked on single runs in the third and fourth innings to stretch its lead to 5-0, putting USCB in an uphill battle offensively.

Despite failing to record a hit until the later innings, the Sand Sharks chipped away at the deficit. In the fifth, patience paid off as Noah Campbell and Jon Davis drew bases-loaded walks to bring home USCB's first two runs. Jeremy Brown added a sacrifice fly in the eighth to trim the lead to 5-3.

USCB had a golden opportunity to tie the game later that inning when Cooper McDaniel singled with two outs, stole third after advancing on a wild pitch, but was left stranded.

The Sand Sharks, now looking to keep their postseason hopes alive, turn their attention to a pivotal Peach Belt Conference series at home against USC Aiken beginning Friday night. USCB trails Augusta by just one game for the final playoff spot, making this weekend's three-game set a must-win stretch.

First pitch Friday at Richard Gray Baseball Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m.
