COLUMBUS -- The Sand Sharks split Saturday's doubleheader with Columbus State, winning game one 1-0 and falling in the finale 3-1.
GAME ONE
It was a pitcher's duel from the start, with both starters matching zeroes through the first five innings. Saria Simmons opened the top of the sixth with a single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tamiyah Whitlock grounded out to the right side, and Jaden Goodwin brought home Simmons with a single to right.
Madison Murphy (6-5) was brilliant in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout. She allowed only one hit while striking out seven and issuing three free passes. The Cougars' lone base hit came in the second inning with two outs, but Murphy got the next batter to pop out, ending the threat. The junior righty struck out the side in order in the seventh to secure the win.
GAME TWO
Like in game one, the two teams exchanged scoreless frames through the first two innings. Simmons broke the deadlock with an RBI double in the third, scoring Boyette. The Sand Sharks had a chance to extend the lead, but Whitlock was called out for leaving early.
Columbus State took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of Mary-Catherine Sorrell's two-run single. Holly Lynn added insurance with a solo homer in the following frame. Cassie Brundage (6-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Murphy returned for her second appearance of the day and tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, striking out three more batters.
