BLUFFTON, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) women's soccer team remained unbeaten at home on Wednesday afternoon with a dominant 4-0 victory over Clayton State, earning their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) win of the season.
The Sand Sharks scored twice in each half to seal the win. With the result, USCB improves to 6-1-0 overall and evens its conference record at 1-1-0. Clayton State drops to 1-4-1 on the year and 0-2-0 in conference play.
Four different players found the back of the net for the Sand Sharks. Jasiah Pack opened the scoring early, followed by goals from Kassi Martin, Sophia Willis, and Kensington Daigle. Jenny Hesby led the team with two assists, while Lauren Carmichael added another.
"It's always fun to see four different names on the score sheet for four goals, and thought it was representative of a collective effort today" stated head coach Gary Boughton
Goalkeepers Graysen Asher and Ciazia Powe combined for five saves and recorded USCB's third shutout of the season and their second in the last three matches.
"There are no easy games in this conference. That was a hard-working team with some very dangerous attackers" said Boughton. "Keeping a clean sheet today took a lot of work, and I was really pleased we did."
The Sand Sharks came out aggressively from the kickoff. Pack capitalized early, winning the possession of the ball before firing it into the net in just the second minute for her fifth goal of the season and the early 1-0 lead.
Clayton State responded with two quick chances, but both efforts were off target. Graysen Asher later made her first save of the afternoon on a shot from Emily Torrez to preserve the 1-0 lead.
In the 23rd minute, Kassi Martin doubled the lead. After a throw-in, Hesby won possession and delivered a touch pass to Martin, who finished the goal for her second of the season, putting the Sand Sharks up 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Lakers came out strong after the break, but the Sand Shark defense stood firm, registering a few team blocks to maintain the shutout.
USCB extended the lead in the 61st minute when Lauren Carmichael delivered a well placed corner that Sophia Willis finished with her left foot for her fifth goal of the season.
Another corner in the 75th minute led to the final goal, as Jenny Hesby found Kensington Daigle, who scored her first of the year to make it 4-0.Powe made four second-half saves, including two in the final 10 minutes, to preserve the clean sheet.
