HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team faced Erskine College on Tuesday afternoon, rallying late to complete a come-from-behind victory in extra innings. Cooper McDaniel delivered the walk-off single to seal the win in the 10th innings coming back from five runs down.
USCB improves to 4-9 on the season following the 8-7 victory.
McDaniel, Maddox Robinson, and TJ McCluney each recorded two hits in the win, while Andrew Walters and Noah Campbell led the team with two RBIs apiece. Broker Bailey pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn his first win of the season. Cole Thomas added 2 1/3 innings of relief, striking out two and allowing no runs.
Erskine struck first with three straight singles to push across the game's opening run and take a 1-0 lead.
The Flying Fleet extended the lead in the third inning after two quick outs. A triple kept the inning alive before an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk gave Erskine a 3-0 advantage.
USCB trailed 5-0 after a fourth-inning bases-loaded double play and a wild pitch in the fifth allowed the visitors to add to their lead.
The Sand Sharks responded in the sixth. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for Campbell, who delivered a sacrifice fly to score Terry Dean for USCB's first run. McCluney later scored on a wild pitch, and McDaniel crossed the plate on an error to cut the deficit to two at 5-3.
USCB carried the momentum into the seventh inning and took its first lead of the game. Robinson opened the frame with a double and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to bring the Sand Sharks within one. Another walk forced in the tying run to make it 5-5 before Walters delivered the big hit, a two-RBI single into right field, scoring Raeder McIntire and McCluney for a 7-5 lead.
After USCB stranded runners in the eighth, as Erskine capitalized in the top of the ninth. An RBI groundout cut the deficit to one, and an RBI single tied the game at 7-7 to force extra innings.
In the 10th, McIntire tripled to left-center field with one out, setting the stage for McDaniel, who delivered the walk-off single to secure the 8-7 victory as McIntire crossed the plate.
USCB returns to action this weekend on the road for a three-game series against Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia. The series begins Friday, February 27 at 6 p.m. The Sand Sharks return home March 3rd to face Bridgeport.
