HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team opened a three-game series against Wheeling University on Friday, falling 8–5 in the opener after the Cardinals used a four-run fifth inning to take a lead they would not lose after the Sand Sharks comeback bid fell short.
Wheeling improved to 1–0 on the season, while the Sand Sharks moved to 1–1.
Noah Campbell led the way offensively for USCB, recording a four-hit performance while driving in one run and scoring twice. Nicholas Barcelo and Cooper McDaniel each added two hits in the game.
The opening inning saw the Sand Sharks work out of a jam, stranding two Wheeling baserunners with the help of two fielder's choices to keep the game scoreless.
Wheeling struck first in the third inning, scoring two runs. After the first two batters reached safely to begin the inning, back-to-back walks brought in the game's first run. The second run scored on a hit batter for the 2-0 lead over USCB.
Trailing 2–0 in the bottom of the third, the Sand Sharks responded to tie the game. Barcelo opened the inning with a single, followed by an RBI double from Campbell to cut the deficit to 2–1. A groundout moved Campbell to third, and he later scored on a wild pitch to even the score.
The Cardinals put two runners on base in the fourth inning, but USCB worked around the threat to keep the game tied.
The game remained 2–2 until the fifth inning, when Wheeling scored four runs on two hits. An RBI single brought home the first run, followed by a two-run single and a hit batter to make the score 6–2.
The Sand Sharks looked to answer in the bottom of the fifth, collecting two hits, but left two runners on base.
In the seventh inning, Wheeling extended its lead to 8–2 after a two-RBI triple. USCB answered with one run in the bottom of the seventh when McDaniel doubled and later scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Walters. The Sand Sharks continued to battle in the eighth inning, loading the bases before a two-RBI single by McDaniel cut the deficit to 8–5.
After a scoreless top of the ninth, the Sand Sharks threatened again, as the leadoff hitter reached on a walk and a second walk with two outs brought the tying run to the plate. However, the Cardinals worked out of the jam to secure the 8–5 victory.
USCB baseball returns to action Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for game two of the series, before closing out the three-game set Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
