MILLEDGEVILLE, GEORGIA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team closed out its three-game series with Georgia College & State on Sunday. After being tied 5-5, the Bobcats scored 10 unanswered runs to secure a 15-5 victory.
The Sand Sharks fall to 4-12 on the season with an 0-9 conference record.
USCB's offense was led by Nicholas Barcelo, who finished with two hits, one run, and four RBIs after hitting a game-tying grand slam. Noah Campbell also recorded two hits. Cooper McDaniel added a hit and an RBI.
The Sand Sharks jumped on the board early after a one-out single by Raeder McIntire, followed by a Campbell single to put two runners on base. McDaniel then hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the early 1-0 lead.
Georgia College & State answered in the bottom of the inning after a walk and a single set up an RBI single to even the score at 1-1. USCB used a double play and a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Barcelo and Terry Dean reached safely to begin the second inning, but Georgia College & State worked out of the jam before taking the lead in the bottom half. With runners on second and third, GCSU delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to take a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, the Bobcats added another two-RBI single through the left side to extend the advantage to 5-1.
USCB responded quickly in the third inning as Campbell, McDaniel, and Andrew Walters all reached safely before Barcelo tied the game with a one-out grand slam to left field, evening the score at 5-5.
In the home half of the third, the Bobcats regained the lead at 6-5 with an RBI single up the middle. In the fourth inning, they added another run on an RBI double to take a 7-5 lead through four innings.
The game broke open in the sixth inning when a walk and two hit batters loaded the bases. A two-RBI single followed by a three-run home run pushed the Bobcats ahead 12-5. They added two more runs in the inning on a single to left field, extending the lead to 14-5 through six innings.
In the seventh inning, the Bobcats plated the final run. A single and two walks loaded the bases before an RBI single ended the game with a 15-5 final score.
USCB returns home Tuesday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. matchup against the University of Bridgeport at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.
