DUE WEST, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team competed in a midweek non-conference game against Erskine College on Tuesday afternoon. The Flying Fleet used a fast start, scoring runs in the first three innings, including a six-run second inning, to secure a 14–3 win.
The USCB offense was led by five different players who each recorded a hit. Terry Dean finished with a team-high two RBIs, while Raeder McIntire drove in the other run. Jon Davis, Maddox Robinson, and Kris Levensteins each scored a run. Davis Hodges led the Sand Sharks on the mound with two scoreless innings while striking out one.
The Sand Sharks were first on the board, scoring a run on a Raeder McIntire RBI double to left field that brought home Maddox Robinson, who reached base to lead off the game. USCB led 1–0 heading into the bottom of the first.
Erskine responded with back-to-back singles, and a passed ball tied the game before an RBI single to left-center gave the Flying Fleet a 2–1 lead.
In the second inning, with the score still 2–1, Erskine used a six-run frame to build an 8–1 lead. The inning began with an error that allowed three runs to score, making it 5–1, before a two-RBI single extended the lead to 7–1. A wild pitch brought in the sixth run of the inning.
Erskine added two more runs in the third inning. A sacrifice fly made it 9–1, and a triple followed by an error pushed the score to 10–1.
The Sand Sharks answered in the fourth inning with two runs. Levensteins and Davis reached base before a Terry Dean two-RBI double to right-center field scored both runners, cutting the deficit to 10–3.
The score remained 10–3 until Erskine added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. An RBI single made it 11–3 before a three-run home run extended the lead to 14–3.
Over the final three innings, the Sand Sharks had a baserunner in each frame, but Erskine worked out of trouble to close out the 14–3 victory.
The two teams split the season series after the Sand Sharks won the first meeting earlier in the year.
USCB returns home on Wednesday, March 18, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. against Embry-Riddle at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
