HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team faced Savannah State in a non-conference doubleheader and completed the sweep over the Tigers.
The Sand Sharks used an eight-run second inning in game one to take control and closed out a 13-4 win. In game two, USCB scored in the first three innings before holding on for a 9-8 victory.
Following the two wins, the Sand Sharks improved to 17-11 on the season.
GAME ONE
In the opening game of the afternoon, the Sand Sharks were led by Taelor Chang, who finished with three RBIs, one of four players to drive in at least two runs. Ashley Grieser, Avery Alexander, and Emma Brinkman each drove in two runs, while Catharine Conway and Saria Simmons each scored three runs.
Cassie Brundage earned her fifth win of the season, throwing a complete game and striking out four Tigers.
After three straight outs in the top of the first inning, the Sand Sharks offense struck early after loading the bases. Chang drew an RBI walk for the early 1-0 lead. Grieser then drove in the second run before Alexander pushed across the third run of the inning for a 3-0 advantage.
Savannah State answered in the top of the second inning with three runs. A double steal with runners on the corners made it 3-1, and an RBI single followed by a sacrifice bunt tied the game at 3-3.
The Sand Sharks responded with a big bottom of the second, scoring eight runs. With runners on the corners, Brinkman scored on a double steal to give USCB a 4-3 lead. Another run came home on a wild pitch before Grieser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in a run for a 6-3 lead. Alexander added an RBI single scoring Simmons to extend the lead.
Allie McCleer drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run before Brinkman drove in two more for a 10-3 lead. Emma Reynolds added an RBI hit to make it 11-3 through two innings.
Savannah State added a run in the top of the third inning on a solo home run to right-center field, cutting the lead to 11-4.
The score remained 11-4 until the bottom of the fifth inning. Conway started the rally with a walk and a stolen base, and a Simmons single set up runners on the corners. Chang then delivered a two-RBI single to seal the 13-4 run-rule victory in five innings.
GAME TWO
In game two, Chloe Turner led the team with three RBIs, adding two hits and two runs scored. Ashley Grieser and MJ Stradinger each drove in two runs, while Catharine Conway had a team-high three hits. The Sand Sharks finished with eight strolen bases in the game.
Casey Cantwell picked up her second win of the season, pitching 5.1 innings with four strikeouts. Madison Murphy recorded two strikeouts and earned her first save of the season.
Savannah State struck first in a wild opening inning, scoring four runs after loading the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly brought in the first run, followed by an RBI single and a two-RBI single to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Conway led off with a single and stole second before Grieser drove her in with an RBI single. With two runners on, Turner delivered a two-RBI triple to cut the deficit to one. Stradinger followed with an RBI to tie the game at 4-4.
The Tigers put two runners on in the top of the second, but Cantwell worked out of the jam, striking out the final batter to keep the game tied.
USCB took the lead in the bottom of the second. Conway walked and stole two bases before Simmons drove her in with an RBI single for a 5-4 lead. After Simmons stole second, Grieser added another RBI single to make it 6-4.
Cantwell pitched a perfect third inning, and the Sand Sharks added another run in the bottom half. After Stradinger stole second, Conway delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-4.
The score remained 7-4 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Sand Sharks added two insurance runs. A single and a walk set up an RBI double by Turner, and Stradinger later drove in Turner to make it 9-4.
Savannah State attempted a comeback in the seventh, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 9-8, but a flyout ended the game and secured the sweep for USCB.
USCB will travel for a weekend conference series against Georgia College beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday.
