Six Scoreless Innings from the Bullpen Lift Sand Sharks Past Eagles

HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team faced Embry-Riddle on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. USCB used a three-run fifth inning to break a 2–2 tie before closing out a 5–2 win behind six scoreless innings from the bullpen.

The Sand Sharks improved to 5–21 on the season.

USCB's offense was led by Andrew Walters, who recorded two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Colby Reynolds drove in a run, while Luke Doty scored twice in the win. Cole Thomas pitched four scoreless innings while striking out one. The Sand Sharks bullpen combined for six scoreless innings, as Alex Simmons and Joe Turner handled the final two, with Turner earning the save.

The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the second inning when the Sand Sharks struck first. A leadoff double by Walters sparked the rally, and with two outs, Reynolds delivered an RBI single to give USCB a 1–0 lead.

Embry-Riddle answered in the third inning with a leadoff double, and two batters later, the Eagles hit back-to-back doubles to score two runs and take a 2–1 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

In the home half of the third, Doty singled to center field and then stole second base, setting up Walters' game-tying RBI single to even the score at 2–2.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Sand Sharks regained control in the fifth. A single by Noah Campbell and a walk by Nicholas Barcelo set the inning. Doty reached on an error that allowed Campbell to score, giving USCB a 3–2 lead.

On the next play, a double steal forced a throwing error by the Eagles, allowing both Barcelo and Doty to score and extending the lead to 5–2.

Embry-Riddle threatened in the seventh inning, loading the bases, but a foul out to right field ended the rally and kept the Sand Sharks' lead.

The Eagles put two runners on in the eighth, but USCB worked out of the jam. The Sand Sharks then sealed the win with a perfect 1–2–3 ninth inning.

USCB returns home this weekend for a three-game series against USC Aiken, beginning Friday night at 6:00 p.m., followed by games on Saturday and Sunday.
