Sand Sharks Drop Rubber Match to Columbus State

COLUMBUS, GEORGIA — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team concluded its three-game series against Columbus State as the Cougars jumped out to an early lead before, securing a 10–2 win over the Sand Sharks in the rubber match.

USCB falls to 7–25 overall and 2–19 in conference play.

The Sand Sharks were led by Cooper McDaniel and Terry Dean, who each recorded an RBI. Dean, Noah Campbell, and McDaniel each tallied two hits, while Maddox Robinson and Campbell scored the team's two runs.

On the mound, Carson Tillotson, Asher Western, Ryan Tayman, and Alex Simmons each turned in scoreless outings.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, Columbus State struck first. A leadoff single followed by a stolen base set up an RBI single to give the Cougars a 1–0 lead.

USCB threatened in the second with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second, but a foul out ended the inning, keeping Columbus State in front.

The Cougars extended their lead in the third. A leadoff single and a hit-by-pitch led to a run scoring on a wild pitch, followed by a sacrifice fly. A two-RBI single later in the inning pushed the lead to 5–0.

Columbus State added to its advantage in the fourth. Back-to-back walks and a double steal set up another sacrifice fly to make it 6–0. An RBI single and a two-RBI double extended the lead to 10–0.

The Sand Sharks got on the board in the fifth when Campbell singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, allowing McDaniel to drive him in with an RBI double to left field.

USCB added another run in the seventh. Robinson reached safely, and two batters later, Dean delivered an RBI double to score him and cut the deficit to 10–2.

Columbus State worked around two hits in the ninth, as Dean and Campbell both singled, but a double play sealed the game and the series for the Cougars.

The Sand Sharks return to action on the road Tuesday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch against Savannah State in Savannah, Georgia.
