AUGUSTA, GEORGIA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team opened a three-game series on the road against Augusta on Friday. The Sand Sharks used a six-run fourth inning to take their first lead of the game, one they would not let away leading to an 11–3 run-rule victory.
With the win, the Sand Sharks improve to 25–17 on the season, while Augusta falls to 20–22.
Caleigh Eubanks led the team with four hits, scoring two runs and driving in one. Taelor Chang and Alyssa Rose each recorded a team-high three RBIs, while Saria Simmons scored a team-high three runs.
Madison Murphy pitched a complete six-inning game, striking out six batters to earn her 14th win of the season.
After a scoreless first inning, Augusta struck first in the bottom of the second. A leadoff walk came around to score on an RBI groundout, giving the Jaguars a 1–0 lead.
The Sand Sharks responded quickly in the top of the third. Following a one-out walk by Simmons, Chloe Turner delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 1–1.
Augusta answered in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs. Back-to-back singles set up a two-RBI double to right-center field, giving the Jaguars a 3–1 lead after three innings.
USCB rallied in the fourth inning, plating six runs. Eubanks led off with a single, followed by a double from Emma Brinkman to put runners on second and third. Catharine Conway drove in a run with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3–2, and Tamiyah Whitlock followed with another RBI single to tie the game. Chang then gave the Sand Sharks their first lead with an RBI single, and Turner added a sacrifice fly. Eubanks and Rose each drove in a run to cap the inning.
The Sand Sharks extended their lead in the fifth. After Augusta was held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, two singles set up a two-RBI double by Chang, making it 9–3. Augusta threatened by loading the bases, but USCB escaped without allowing a run.
In the sixth, the Sand Sharks added two more runs. Eubanks led off with a single, and Rose followed with a two-run home run to push the lead to 11–3.
Murphy allowed just one baserunner in the bottom of the sixth to seal the run-rule victory in the series opener.
The Sand Sharks return to action Saturday afternoon to close out the three-game series with a doubleheader against Augusta, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
