BLUFFTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team closed out a stretch of three straight games on the road with a commanding 6-1 victory over the Chowan Hawks on Wednesday afternoon.
USCB opened the scoring with two goals from Erin Barrett in the opening 20 minutes. Before later in the second half USCB had two goals in the span of 14 seconds of game action, setting the stage for an Erin Barrett hat trick in the victory.
"I thought we showed a good response and level of
resilience today to close off a long stretch on the
road" stated head coach Gary Boughton.
USCB improves to 2-1 on the season following the win.
Barrett led the Sand Sharks with three goals on three shots on goal. Three other Sand Sharks scored a goal, including Gabriela Colon, Mayli Hepfer and Kate Johnson all being their first with the Sand Sharks. Graysen Asher started in goal, while Asher and Addie Rollison combined for two saves in the victory.
"For four different goal scorers to score their first collegiate goals, including Erin's hat trick, was certainly exciting to be
a part of" said Boughton.
In the opening half, the Sand Sharks controlled the first 45 minutes, led by Barrett. At the 11:04 mark, USCB capitalized on a scoring opportunity as Gabriela Colon set up Barrett, who found the back of the net to give the Sand Sharks a 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, Barrett struck again. This time, Kate James sent a cross into the middle of the box, where Barrett finished the opportunity for her second goal of the half.
The USCB defense helped control the half, allowing just one shot from the Chowan offense as the Sand Sharks took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Sand Sharks opened the second half the same way as USCB opened the first, scoring two minutes into the half to extend their lead to 3-0. After Sami Ruby and Kassi Martin maintained possession for the Sand Sharks, a quick pass found Colon, who finished the opportunity for the goal.
Just 14 seconds later, the Sand Sharks struck again. Barrett stole possession from Chowan and found the back of the net for her third goal of the game, completing the hat trick. She became the first USCB player to record a hat trick since Jasiah Pack accomplished the feat during the 2025 season.
Chowan was able to get on the scoreboard in the 58th minute when Denisse Jorge-Garcia scored the Hawks' first goal of the game following a cross into the box, cutting the Sand Sharks' lead to 4-1.
USCB responded with two more goals. The first came from Johnson for her first goal of the season off a Sand Sharks corner kick. Lauren Carmichael sent the corner into the box, and Johnson headed the ball into the back of the net to give USCB a 5-1 lead at the 79:31 mark.
Two minutes later, the Sand Sharks struck again after gaining possession. USCB earned another corner kick, this time sent in by Kensington Daigle, setting up Hepfer for the goal. After an initial save by the Chowan goalkeeper, Hepfer found the back of the net to extend the lead to 6-1 with around eight minutes remaining.
The Sand Sharks closed out the 6-1 victory over Chowan on Wednesday afternoon.
It was a pretty complete game from the team. We showed the ability to score from a lot of
different ways," stated Boughton.
USCB will return home for its first home game of the season on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. against West Alabama. Free Sunset Slush Savannah Italian Ice will be available to the first 100 students in attendance with a valid student ID.
