COLUMBIA, SC-The USCB Track and Field team enjoyed their best meet of the season on Wednesday as they competed at the Gamecock Open at the Weems Baskin Track in Columbia.
“I am really proud how our team competed today as many of our athletes got personal bests and a few school records fell,” said Coach
Larry Kimball. He added “We will go to the Sun Conference Championships in a week and a half and see if we can make some noise.”
Shannon Anderson started the day for USCB competing in the long jump for the first time ever finishing fifth with a distance of 6.22 meters. He would later finish third in the 400 meters in a time of 50.39.
Selena Hutson scored a big personal best for the 1500 meters finishing fourth in a school record time of 5:19.44. In the very next event,
Nic Tones won his second 1500 meter race in a row as he easily won the men's event in 4:08.43.
Five Sand Shark women took part in the 800 meter event and finished in third through seventh place as Hutson led the USCB attack followed by
Katie Mock,
Jessica Brown, Kristy Grannan and Caity Brady. Not to be out done,
Frank Tinsley came home second in the men's 800 in a time of 1:58.96.
John Stanas had a seven second personal best while dominating his 800 meter heat.
The Sand Shark team will travel to Daytona Beach on April 18 and 19 for the Sun Conference Championships.
Tommy Reeves will attempt to qualify for the NAIA Marathon this Saturday at the Palmetto Half Marathon in Columbia. He will be joined there by redshirt sophomore
John Critchlow who will be running unattached.
