Bluffton, SC - The USCB soccer team opened regular season play hosting Sun Conference foe Ave Maria University on Sunday at Fin Land Field. The Sand Sharks lost the match 1-0 to the Gyrenes and is now 0-1 on the season, and in conference. USCB will be back on the pitch tomorrow as they host Siena Heights University, from Michigan, at 12:00 pm.
After a back-and-forth first half closed in a draw at 0-0 the Sand Sharks started the second half with a fury and pressure the Gyrenes backline early and often. With USCB pressuring AMU was able to get a breakaway and Morgan Collins was able to outpace the Sand Shark backline and put a well-placed shot passed the diving keeper,
Blair Kent, in the 54th minute. USCB continued to pressure in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Sand Sharks were able to outshoot the Gyrenes 15-7, and 9-1 for shots on goal. USCB was led by
Caroline Weldon and
Erin Lynn offensively. For her efforts on the day Jacki Gonzalez, AMU goalkeeper, and
Kre Voight, USCB midfielder, were selected as Player of the Game for each team.
