BABSON PARK, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team has mustered more than its share of late-inning magic this season, but the Sand Sharks found themselves on the wrong end of two exciting finishes Saturday.
Webber International's Maureen Sandidge hit a game-ending grand slam for a 5-1 win in the opener, and teammate Ashley Quigley drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning for a 4-3 win in the second game, handing the Sand Sharks their first two Sun Conference losses after a 4-0 start.
In the opener, USCB (18-4, 4-2) seemed headed for another dramatic victory when
Shelby Zipperer's home run in the top of the seventh gave the Sand Sharks a 1-0 lead, but the Warriors rallied against sophomore
Caroline Pastre.
Pinch-hitter Shelby Jones tied it with an RBI single, and Sandidge ended it with her blast to right.
Zipperer's homer to right-center was one of only three hits against Quigley, who struck out five in a complete-game win.
The Sand Sharks fell behind early in the second game, but they got one run back on
Katie Rietkovich's RBI double in the third and tied it at 3 on consecutive RBI singles by
Sammi Shaffren and
Barbara Phillips in the fourth.
Warriors pitcher Kiana Levy allowed only one more hit the rest of the way, though, and Quigley's one-out walk with the bases loaded in the eighth forced home an unearned run and handed USCB ace
Kristy Cook her first loss in 11 collegiate starts.
The Sand Sharks play a doubleheader at Voorhees College starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday before returning home for a three-game Sun Conference series against Northwood on Friday and Saturday. The first game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, and the series is set to conclude with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.
