Sand Shark Soccer Runs Win Streak To Three Games

Box Score

LAURINBURG, N.C. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team ran its winning streak to a season-best three games with a 1-0 win at St. Andrews University on Sunday.

USCB junior Alexa Muffley scored the game's only goal on a header off Jamie Smith's corner kick in the 36th minute and junior goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert made seven saves for her third shutout of the season.

It was a non-conference tune-up for USCB (7-8-1), which was coming off an emotional 2-1 win at rival SCAD Savannah on Friday.

"After our win Friday we came out flat and uninspired today against St. Andrews," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "Fortunately for us we are a good enough team to get the win today despite a poor performance."

Muffley's fifth goal of the season ties her with Steph Moldenhauer for the team lead - and the single-season school record - and her 12 points are one behind freshman Brittany Lorentz. Mummert's biggest save came on a free kick from just outside the box, and she was able to push it up and snag it as three Knights crashed.

The Sand Sharks face two critical Sun Conference matches at home this week, hosting Southeastern at 3 p.m. Thursday and Ave Maria at 1 p.m. Saturday. USCB is in position to host a quarterfinal match in the Sun Conference Tournament with two victories.

"We need to learn to be consistent and ready to play at our level day in and day out," Heberling said. "I need to get the players focused and driven this week for our final two conference matches."
