HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team had its nine-game winning streak snapped but rebounded to start another one Thursday, losing 5-4 to St. Ambrose (Iowa) before beating Brewton-Parker (Ga.) 7-3 to wrap up the Smash Hit Softball Classic at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
The Sand Sharks (18-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead against St. Ambrose, as junior shortstop C.J. Browder blasted a two-run home run in the first inning and sophomore first baseman Taylor Triplett added an RBI single in the third.
The Queen Bees rallied for three runs in the fourth, chipping away with consecutive RBI doubles by Erin O'Donnell and Mackenzie Snowbarger and tying it on Stephanie Hebison's sacrifice fly.
Browder's run-scoring infield single put USCB back in front in the fifth, but St. Ambrose scored unearned runs in the sixth and seventh to hand the Sand Sharks' their first loss of the Smash Hit Classic.
Sophomore Cailtin Campbell (6-2) took the tough-luck loss for USCB, allowing two unearned runs over 2 2/3 innings of relief.
The Sand Sharks didn't need long to get back to their winning ways, rebounding to knock off Brewton-Parker in the final game of the event.
Browder again started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the three-run first inning, and Triplett and Mariaha Sanborn added RBI singles in the frame. USCB tacked on four runs in the sixth, getting a two-run single from Sammi Shaffren an RBI double from Alexandria Simmons and a run-scoring single from Browder.
Brewton-Parker broke through for one run in the sixth and two in the seventh but couldn't get any closer.
USCB sophomore Kristy Cook (8-0) earned the win, allowing three runs — two earned — on nine hits with four strikeouts in a complete game.
The Sand Sharks have a week off before opening Sun Conference play at Ave Maria on March 22.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Browder went 4-for-7 with two runs scored and five RBIs on the day. She has a team-high 35 RBIs. … Brewton-Parker's run in the sixth inning snapped a streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings for Cook, who has been the winning pitcher in five of USCB's last six wins. … USCB is 42-4 all-time at Richard Gray Sports Complex, including a 16-2 mark this season.
