HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The top two seeds in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round USC Beaufort Bracket will play one more time with a trip to Columbus, Ga., on the line, as 15
th-ranked Spring Hill (Ala.) blanked top-seeded and ninth-ranked USCB 4-0 on Wednesday at Richard Gray Sports Complex, forcing a winner-take-all championship game at 3 p.m.
After taking the loss against the Sand Sharks on Tuesday, Spring Hill freshman Caroline Sagrera (34-9) shut down one of the nation's most prolific offenses in the rematch, striking out eight in a three-hitter – her 18
th shutout of the season and her third of the tournament.
The Badgers (44-15) managed only four hits against USCB ace
Kristy Cook (22-1) but they made them count, as two of the four came in front of a pair of two-run home runs. Shea Blanchard led off the game with a single down the left-field line and scored on Mariha Partman's two-run shot to center, and Raleigh Downs doubled ahead of Sam Leach's blast to left-center in the seventh.
The Sand Sharks (43-5) threatened in the sixth, when
CJ Browder and
Maddie Byrd hit consecutive singles with one out, but Sagrera recorded consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.
