Dominant Pitching Powers @USCBSoftball To Sweep Of Montreat

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARDEEVILLE — Dominant pitching powered the University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Montreat on Friday, as the 12th-ranked Sand Sharks beat the Cavaliers 4-1 and 9-1 at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

USCB (10-2) allowed only four hits in the twinbill, as Kristy Cook and Caitlin Campbell combined on a two-hitter in the opener and Ashlie Layman and Kendall Jumper limited the Cavaliers to two hits in the nightcap.

Cook (4-0) flirted with a perfect game in the first contest, retiring the first 13 batters before a pair of walks set up Megan Recher's RBI single to break up the no-hit bid and cut it to 2-1. The Sand Sharks tacked on two runs in the bottom of the frame on Mariaha Sanborn's home run and Melanie Goolsby's RBI double and Campbell worked two scoreless innings for her first save.

Goolsby also had a solo homer as she went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run to pace the offense. Alexandria Simmons also knocked in a run with a single in the third. Cook struck out three and allowed one run on one hit over five innings and Campbell fanned five and gave up one hit and one walk in her two innings.

Layman (5-0) continued the dominance in the second game, striking out eight over four scoreless innings to improve to 16-0 in her career. She held Montreat without a hit until the fourth, when Alecia Rhinehart beat out an infield single after Sanborn made a diving stab to her left at third base and threw from her knees to make it a close play.

Simmons went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Chelsey Blasingame was 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored three runs and leadoff hitter Missy Hughes went 1-for-2 with four runs scored to lead the offensive outburst.

The Sand Sharks continue their home stand Sunday, hosting Virginia Intermont for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
