CENTRAL, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team took the opening game of a doubleheader and staged a big rally before falling in the second game Saturday at Southern Wesleyan.
The 12th-ranked Sand Sharks won the opener 6-4 and wiped out a six-run deficit before falling 12-11 in the finale to snap their seven-game winning streak.
Sammi Shaffren had two hits and three RBIs and Kristy Cook pitched a complete game to lead USCB (15-3) in the first game. The Sand Sharks had to come back from an early deficit after Allison Barbee's two-run homer in the first inning staked the Warriors to a 2-0 lead.
USCB answered with three in the second when Melanie Goolsby was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Shaffren singled home a run and Alexandria Simmons added a sacrifice fly. The Sand Sharks tacked on three more in the third on Missy Hughes' RBI single and a two-run single from Shaffren.
The four-run cushion proved to be enough for Cook, who allowed four runs — three earned — on eight hits to pick up her sixth win of the season. The Warriors (6-3) scored single runs in the third and fourth to get within 6-4, but they managed only one hit over the final three innings.
Southern Wesleyan again jumped on the Sand Sharks early in the second game, scoring a pair of runs in the first and chasing starter Caitlin Campbell after Barbee's three-run homer in the second made it 5-0. The Warriors tacked on another run in the third for a 6-0 advantage.
Allison Parker kept the Sand Sharks off the board until the fourth, but they quickly charged back with three in the fourth and four in the fifth, claiming a 7-6 lead on Goolsby's two-run single. Southern Wesleyan answered with four in the fifth to move ahead 10-7, and the Sand Sharks scored twice in the sixth to trim it to 10-9.
Callie Wayne's RBI double in the sixth made it 11-9 Warriors, but the Sand Sharks tied it on Goolsby's two-run homer — on an 0-2 pitch — with one out in the seventh to prolong the game. It didn't last much longer, though, as the Warriors loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and ended it on Parker's two-out RBI single to right.
Goolsby finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Mariaha Sanborn went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Taylor Triplett added three hits and an RBI. Cook (6-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
The Sand Sharks host the Smash Hit Classic from Wednesday through Saturday at Richard Gray Sports Complex. USCB plays doubleheaders at 11 a.m. Thursday against St. Francis (Ind.) and at 1 p.m. Saturday against Bryan (Tenn.).
