DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team finished off a perfect road trip and ran its winning streak to eight games by sweeping a Sun Conference doubleheader at Embry-Riddle on Sunday.
The 15th-ranked Sand Sharks beat the Eagles 5-2 and 5-0 to finish the weekend 4-0 in Sun Conference action after sweeping Webber International on Saturday.
Junior Kristy Cook (11-3) picked up her third win of the week in the opener, holding the Eagles to two runs on seven hits while striking out five in a complete game. Cook allowed a run in the first but sat down 11 straight batters before Taylor Cowan led off the fifth with an infield single.
Alexis Estrada matched Cook for most of the game, but USCB (27-5, 4-1 TSC) finally got on the board in the fifth, tying it at 1 on Sammi Shaffren's RBI single and taking the lead when Melanie Goolsby tripled to score Shaffren.
Jessica Osteen doubled in Cowan in the fifth to tie it at 2, but Chelsey Blasingame knocked in the go-ahead run in the sixth and Shaffren tacked on two more with a two-run double later in the inning. Cook worked out of a jam to strand two in the sixth and worked a perfect seventh to nail down the win.
The Sand Sharks didn't need as long to get the bats going in the finale, as Alexandria Simmons tripled in the first and scored on Taylor Triplett's RBI single and Simmons added a two-run blast in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
Shelby Zipperer launched a solo shot in the seventh and USCB pushed across another run in the inning to make it 5-0. That was plenty of support for sophomore Ashlie Layman, who struck out seven in a four-hit shutout.
Simmons went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored — finishing a single short of hitting for the cycle — and Triplett had two hits and an RBI.
The Sand Sharks travel to Columbia College for a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday before returning home for two more Sun Conference doubleheaders next weekend.
