The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, dropping its home opener 3-0 to Georgia Gwinnett at Fin Land Field.Â
The contest was evenly-matched for 65 minutes but took an unexpected turn in the Grizzlies' favor after they went down a player when Mackenzie Bailey was sent off with a second yellow card. The Grizzlies scored three unanswered goals — the first within a minute after Bailey was sent off — and the Sand Sharks couldn't mount a rally.Â
USCB (1-1) had several quality chances in the first half and early in the second but couldn't take advantage. It looked as though the Sand Sharks had caught a break with Bailey's ejection, but it was the Grizzlies to claimed the momentum.
Andreah Creevey ran down a long ball up the right side from Amy Morland and slotted it inside the far post to break the deadlock in the 66th minute. Just nine minutes later, Dominique Fletcher took a long pass from Nikki LeFevre and beat the keeper for a 2-0 advantage.Â
Georgia Gwinnett (1-1) delivered a final dagger in the 87th minute, as Bristol Countess scored to make it a three-goal cushion.Â
The Sand Sharks are back in action Monday, hosting Westminster (Utah) at 11 a.m. at Fin Land Field.Â
