CARSON, Calif. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team's coast-to-coast journey began with a tough 3-2 loss to Marymount California on Wednesday.Â
With a large contingent of USCB supporters on hand, the Sand Sharks fought back from a 2-0 deficit before the Mariners broke through for the game-winner in the 84th minute to end USCB's two-game winning streak.Â
Sophomore Madalyn Adams, a California native, scored her second goal of the season and sophomore Shannon Blair scored her first collegiate goal to bring the Sand Sharks back, and USCB was pressing for the go-ahead goal when the Mariners mounted a counter-attack and Alyssa Lloja scored her second goal of the game to lift the home team.Â
Marymount (2-3) took advantage of a strong wind at its back to score two early goals, as Andrea Faerber opened the scoring in the 27th minute and Lloja added her first goal less than two minutes later.Â
The Sand Sharks (3-3) came to life in the 40th minute, when freshman MJ Orduna sent a long diagonal ball over the top and Adams was able to track it down and send it over the out-of-position keeper for her second goal in two games.Â
With the wind in their favor, the Sand Sharks took control in the second half and netted the equalizer in the 64th minute. Sam Satterlee sent a corner kick across the goal, and Megan Benoist was able to flick it to the back post where Blair redirected it into the goal.Â
"This team does not give up," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "In the past, being down 2-0 would have sealed the game for our opponent. This team rises to the challenge. As we move forward, we will begin to play with that same intensity and desire for 90 minutes."Â
The Sand Sharks wrap up the two-game West Coast trip at 7 p.m. Friday against Antelope Valley.Â
"The support we've had from the moment we landed at LAX has been amazing," Heberling said. "Sand Shark Nation really is nationwide. We can't thank our fans enough for the hospitality and support."Â
