MOUNT VERNON, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort turned a frustrating game into a thrilling victory Saturday, scoring twice in the final five minutes to claim a 3-2 win at Brewton-Parker.Â
Freshman Hayley Pina scored the equalizer with about five minutes left and junior Alexandria Radue added her first goal as a Sand Shark for the game-winner less than three minutes later.Â
The payoff was a long time coming for the Sand Sharks, who dominated possession and peppered the Brewton-Parker goal with shots but had a tough time cashing in for most of the afternoon.Â
"This game was frustrating because we were doing so much right but could not get the ball in the net," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "Our team finally clicked and created so many scoring opportunities today. It was exciting to see the team move the ball so well."Â
The Sand Sharks (4-4) opened the scoring in the first half when freshman Karen Pimentel took a cross from sophomore Madalyn Adams and slotted it behind the goalkeeper, but the Barons converted on a corner kick to forge a 1-1 tie at halftime.Â
Brewton-Parker scored on a breakaway to take the lead with about 12 minutes left and set up USCB's late heroics. MJ Orduna sent a pass to Pina, who slotted it past the diving goalkeeper to tie it, and the Sand Sharks kept the pressure on as Radue beat a defender and the sliding keeper for the game-winner.
Senior Fred Gallman earned the victory in goal for USCB.Â
"This game is the spark we needed to start conference next week," Heberling said. "I am proud of how we fought and continued to create opportunities throughout the match."Â
The Sand Sharks open Sun Conference play next weekend with a road trip to Florida, facing Northwood at 3 p.m. Friday and Johnson & Wales at 1 p.m. Sunday.Â
