MARS HILL, NORTH CAROLINA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) women's soccer team hit the road Tuesday afternoon for a nonconference matchup against Mars Hill. The Sand Sharks battled to a 1–1 draw after an equalizing goal from Maggie Olsen in response to a Lions score earlier in the second half.
With the tie, the Sand Sharks move to 9–5–3 on the season.
In the draw, USCB outshot Mars Hill 13–9 overall and 10–5 on goal. Olsen recorded the Sand Sharks' lone goal on one of her three shots, while Jasiah Pack led the team with five shots. Ciazia Powe started in goal making four saves.
The Sand Sharks came out strong, registering three shots on goal in the opening eight minutes, all from different players, but Lions goalkeeper Peyton Pierson turned each away to keep the score level at 0–0.
Ciazia Powe made her first save of the afternoon in the 11th minute, stopping a shot directed to the bottom center of the goal. Mars Hill nearly broke through just before halftime, firing a shot to the left, but Powe made another save to keep the match scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
Early in the second half, USCB continued to press, earning a corner kick that led to another shot on target, but Pierson again made the save to preserve the 0–0 score.
The Lions struck first in the 64th minute, when Mia Calderon found the back of the net to give Mars Hill a 1–0 lead.
Powe made another save in the 72nd minute to keep the Sand Sharks within reach. Shortly after, USCB capitalized on a corner kick opportunity as Maggie Olsen netted the equalizer, tying the match at 1–1 for her third goal of the season.
The Sand Sharks continued to pressure late, creating two more shots on goal in the final minute, but Pierson held strong for Mars Hill, ending the match in a draw.
USCB wraps up the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. with the Peach Belt Conference Playoffs to start the following week.
