Orduña Scores Twice As @USCBSoccer Beats St. Andrews In OT

Just four games into her collegiate career, MJ Orduna has shown a knack for getting herself into the right place at the right time.

On Friday night, her timing and placement couldn't have been been better.

Orduna scored her second goal of the night four minutes into overtime to lift the University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting St. Andrews at Fin Land Field.

It also was Orduna who scored the game's first goal, pouncing on a rebound of a Hayley Pina shot to put the Sand Sharks on top in the 33rd minute. She added her second game-winner of the season in the 94th minute, when Bridgette Noonan played a long pass to Steph Moldenhauer, who played a perfect pass to set up Orduna at the far post.

"MJ is great at finding openings and getting in front of the goal," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "She has great instincts and is able to keep her composure in those situations."

The Sand Sharks (2-2) dominated possession in the first half and gave up only one shot on goal, but St. Andrews (0-1) came out of the break with renewed energy and tied it when Chelsea Seng put away a rebound off Abby Buren's header in the 74th minute.

USCB answered with enthusiasm and had several close calls in the final minutes of regulation.

"For the first time in four years I saw fight in our team," Heberling said. "We played poorly in the second half to give up the equalizer, but the girls responded and applied the pressure necessary to end the half and go into the overtime with momentum."

Senior goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert was outstanding for USCB, stopping 10 of 11 shots and taking away numerous other scoring opportunities by aggressively coming off her line to halt runs.

"Chelsie had a phenomenal game today," Heberling said. "She showed signs of the excellence she possessed in her sophomore year. Without her big stops we would not have had the chance to win it in overtime."

The Sand Sharks wrap up a four-game homestand at noon Sunday, taking on Talladega (Ala.) for a non-conference contest.
