The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team notched its second consecutive victory — and its first shutout of the season— with a 2-0 win over visiting Talladega College on Sunday at Fin Land Field.Â
Sophomore Madalyn Adams and freshman MJ Orduna scored goals and senior Chelsie Mummert registered three saves for her 11th career shutout for the Sand Sharks (3-2), who wrapped up a 2-2 homestand.Â
The Sand Sharks struggled to adjust to Talladega's trap, as they were whistled offside eight times — seven of them in the first half — and Tornadoes keeper Dammie Akano made seven first-half saves.Â
USCB finally broke through on a set piece in the 37th minute, as junior Pascale Rocca played the ball into the box and Adams headed it inside the right post for her first goal as a Sand Shark.Â
That proved to be the game-winner, as the Tornadoes were unable to mount much of an attack. Mummert was never really challenged and two of Talladega's three shots were long blasts for 30 yards or more.Â
"With deliberate slow play and gamesmanship on full display, it was extremely difficult to find a rhythm in the first half," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "After some adjustments and some emotional effort, we were able to break through and have our opportunities. I'm proud of our team and their efforts today. They fought and played with everything they had to compete and win."
The start of the second half was delayed about an hour because of lightning, and the Sand Sharks turned up the pressure when play resumed. Orduna scored her third goal in two games in the 67th minute, pouncing after Akano was unable to hold onto a blast from Bridgette Noonan.Â
With four goals in her first five collegiate games, Orduna already ranks fourth on USCB's single-season list and sixth on the career list.Â
Play was halted in the 72nd minute and Talladega, which was playing with only 11 players, elected to end the game early.Â
"I reminded our players to remember where we came from in our first season," Heberling said. "That's why we are where we are today. It wasn't easy, but we never took the easy way out and always, always respected the game."Â
The Sand Sharks depart Tuesday for a two-game trip to the West Coast. They will face Marymount California at 5 p.m. ET Wednesday and Antelope Valley at 7 p.m. ET Friday.Â
